The Movies I've Watched

I got to thinking tonight about the movies that I have watched over the last year, and it's interesting to look at what I've actually watched. Some of them I've reviewed on the blog, others I haven't. Some of them are movies that most people have watched, others are ones that were wildly popular in some parts of the world and never made that big of a splash here, and others are just good movies.

This is the list of movies that I've watched over the last year or so; if I've done a review, I'll have it linked:

The next movies in my queue for watching however, are BlueThunder (though I suspect I've gotten the fullscreen version instead of the proper widescreen version), The Blue Lagoon, and the Indiana Jones trilogy.

I'd love to hear your suggestions for movies that I should/have to/need to watch. Don't be afraid to make obvious suggestions; chances are that I haven't seen it (and may not have even heard of it). The last movie I watched in a theatre was (if I'm remembering correctly) The Santa Clause.

Look! Up in the sky!

No, it's not Superman, but it's the reason that I had to stop at Target the other day to get some batteries. This, after bringing along two sets of rechargeable batteries for my camera, then them all dying while on our way down to pick up a dollar each just for showing up at a cellphone store.

While on the way back towards home, I spotted an object flying around, and identified it right away as a blimp. So, a stop to get batteries was in order. Luckily, there was a Target, so after spending way too long in there (cos I was looking for other things than just batteries - more on that in the near future), I got the batteries and the chase, per se, was on.

We went out to the freeway as we were trying to actually get back to home, but that didn't work, and the blimp was actually over an area to the west of the highway. I wasn't going to say to get off the road, but nevertheless we did and wound up going in a big U-turn; not back onto the freeway, but onto the next major north-south road. Eventually, we got to a stoplight where I was able to get the camera out of the window and take a picture. And here's the result.

If you're curious, this is the Outback Steakhouse Bloomin' Onion I, which is flying around the country taking pictures of community events. However, at the time, we thought that it was there to be at the races that were being held over the weekend, but as it turned out, it wasn't. They were taking pictures of little league games, and the photos are on their website to view.

Fear of Failure

This is the first time that I'm doing this particular meme, called the Hump Day Hmm. Just a note that this is a very, very long post (nearly 1,700 words according to Word).

The topic set out this week is this - Have you kept a secret or have you lied, directly or by omission, about something big? How did you make your decision---did it bring about justice? How did forgiveness fit in (or not)? Would you do it the same next time?

I think the biggest thing that I have ever lied about is failing in school; it's something that I'm not particularly proud of, but at the time, I didn't want to be embarrassed about it. Generally, one of the first things that you'll hear from someone who knows me really well is that I am a very intelligent person. This is something that has stuck to me for almost all of my life, considering that I started reading when I was something like three or four years old; before I started school. In fact, one thing that I remember about my early days in school was being able to count to what I thought in kindergarten to be a large number - seventy or so.

Also, I was determined by the school to be so advanced for kindergarten that they moved me up to the first grade. For a while, I was there for a couple of hours, and then when they had their lunch, I would go down to my afternoon kindergarten, but then with about six weeks left in the year, I was moved there on a permanent basis. (Side note: As I'm writing this, I'm seeing mental pictures of my classrooms in my head; it's kinda freaky).

So, anyway, I went through first, second and third grades with no real issues, but then when I hit fourth grade, I had some issues with my reading homework; I don't really remember much about it. The only thing that I remember was that if I didn't have my work done, I wanted to stay home. Not necessarily to get it home, but just to avoid being there to not turn it in (I never actually had homework until part of the way through third grade; nowadays I hear stories about kindergarteners getting work to take home and it makes me cringe). Ironically, one of the incidents that I remember was asking to stay home for the first inauguration of President Clinton; I think the reason that I wanted to stay home is that I wanted to watch it - nothing more. So, as the year went on, my grade in reading went down; it might have ahit a failing grade, but I think I managed to spare myself through some extra credit. I don't remember it as well as the next time I wound up having trouble in school.

A couple of years pass by, and I'm now in the 8th grade. It's a new school building (which looks remarkably like a jail, just with casement windows and without bars on them), and new teachers. Also, add in middle school kids who aren't the kindest ones around; they always picked on me for being overweight and not totally fitting into the rest of the class. At some point along the track, I started to just not care. Homework would go unfinished and not turned in; projects would go on the wayside for no good reason; and things just kind of fell apart. At home, I tried to put on the façade of everything going well. However, the progress reports (on which I would try to hide the grades on and only show the line where it was to be signed) and the report cards (which I actually would make sure that I got home first to intercept so that my mom didn't see) showed the truth. I was failing Reading. Again.

Not only that, the grades in my other classes (except for math, science, and band) weren't that spectacular. I probably still have the letter from my brother where he takes me to task for failing reading, basically saying that it was ridiculous and that I need to fix it. In all honesty, I should have been able to fix it, and I did make an effort to do it, but not enough of one. I still remember at the end of the year, I was thinking that I had managed to get the grades sorted out enough that I could be part of the graduation ceremonies and go on the class field trip to the local amusement park. I even turned in a check for the trip, but then I got asked to come to the front of the class to pick up the check as I hadn't fixed my grades. I also was not eligible for the graduation because of the situation I put myself in.

However, and I consider myself fortunate for this, the solution to the problem was to attend summer school. I only had to fill in my reading curriculum for the year, and the task that I had was to read some books (which they held for me; all I needed to bring was a notebook, pen, and myself), and write short book reports on them. And I did just that, and wound up being able to leave summer school within two weeks or so; a much shorter time than just about everyone else there for remedial 8th grade studies.

You would think that after this experience I would have learnt my lesson and made sure that if I needed help to swallow my pride and ask for it. Well, that didn't happen when I got into college. In all honesty, I probably should have delayed going for a year, as I don't think that I did want to go; I only ever applied for one school, and that was at the very end of the application period. I didn't apply for any scholarships, which if I would have, I probably could have wound up with a free ride to any school I wanted, but that's all in the past now, and quite honestly, I am glad that I got out of there because it wasn't working out for me.

The first semester I was there went fairly well; I managed to get As and Bs (though I think that there might have been a C in there, from my physics class). Second semester started off pretty good, but it didn't last. About three weeks into the term, I had to go back home because my mom was going to have heart surgery. Sure, I got all the work that I had to do, but really my mind was elsewhere. The worst part of all was that I knew I had to get back up to school and keep going with my education. I really didn't want to; I would have been quite happy if I could have stayed home to make sure everything was OK. One memory that sticks quite strongly in my mind is when I was heading back up there on the train, I started to compose an email to a teacher who was and still is a friend of mine and while doing it I literally broke down in my seat. It was really a case of the emotion just getting to me, and just trying to let it go.

After I got back up there, the same thing happened then as happened in 8th grade - I got to a point where I just didn't want to be there. I didn't understand what was going on with my classes; I started to feel swamped by the work, and just kind of gave up. I never really looked at the report card for that semester, but all I know is that I wound up on academic probation for the next semester; I believe that I actually wound up failing every one of my classes for the semester. At home, I just kept the usual "everything's fine" act up. The third semester went slightly better; I was in a slightly different situation where I had started out sharing a dorm, but soon my roommate moved to a different room, leaving me to be by myself. I got to the end of the semester and I made the decision that I had had enough. It was time to get out of there, but I didn't know how to say it when I got home for the Christmas/New Year break.

When I finally decided to say something, it was about a week before I had to go back, and I just said that I didn't want to go back, mainly because (and I'm not sure if I actually mentioned this) I had failed classes again in the last semester and since I was on probation already, they wouldn't have allowed me to take any more classes. It really didn't go over too well, but it would have been much worse if we would have gotten all the way there, dropped me and my stuff off and then had to call and say that I wasn't allowed to stay in school because I had failed classes last semester, and the one before that, causing me to be on suspension.

I think that if I were to be in the same position, I'd be more likely to say something about it, but there is the very high likelihood that I would try to hide it because I don't like admitting that I have failed, but it's a part of life and it's something that I've come to accept, especially when I realize how many successes I've actually had so far, along with the fact that I am very intelligent; it's just that I don't have the type of intelligence that was being looked for in the classes that I failed in.

By the way, in my third semester, I did manage to actually get an A in one of my classes - a basic geology course which was a very fun course where I had a Monday-night lab with mostly part-time students.

I didn't see myself doing this...

At least not *today*, but I did and it feels really good.

I was watching a review of another blog, where the reviewer mentioned that the blog in question was still on a blogspot.com subdomain. He pointed out that if your blog is on x.blogspot.com, you're not really "owning" your space. So, I went to my search bar, changed to Whois and put in sephyroth.

As it turned out, sephyroth.net was available. So, I sent an IM to Snoskred asking what she thought about that domain; admittedly I wasn't totally serious about getting it when I asked, and I was just kinda asking rhetorically. She thought it sounded nice and six minutes later, I'd already gotten through about 7 steps of the checkout process, given them my name and realized something important: I wasn't faffing, I was just doing it because I wanted to do it; the domain was there, ready for the taking.

So, long story short, I am now the proud owner of sephyroth.net. Now, I have to adjust all my counters, etc. to ensure that they all know that I'm there now. There's probably a lot more that I have to do with regards to sites that have my blog listed. One of them is my Technorati Profile <-- now that's how you should make a claim, no? ;)

But for right now, I am feeling really, really great about just saying I'm doing it and then *not* faffing on the decision when I was about ready to do it.

By the way, all bookmarks that point to http://sephyroth.blogspot.com don't necessarily need to be changed over to http://www.sephyroth.net because Blogger will automatically forward you to the new domain. Also, you need to include the www in the address, as that's how it's configured for now.

This was the Week that Was, Vol. 1

Last Monday, I had mentioned that I was "gonna do a weekly update thing from now on". And that has now manifested itself into This was the Week that Was, TW3 for short. It's basically a round-up of blog posts that I found interesting, some new blogs that I've started reading, and a bit of an update on what's gone on here. There'll also be a mention of news from time to time. I hope y'all enjoy it :)

Some blog posts that I really liked -

  • Duncan's TV Ad Land featured some great ads that have been blocked from reairing on British TV because back in the 50s, eggs and toast was seen to be a balanced breakfast. Now you have to have juice.
  • Andrew G (formerly of Channel [V] and currently of Australian Idol) discussed a great insight that he got from emceeing an event featuring the Dalai Lama in Sydney
  • One of my favorite blogs is The Food Pornographer, where tfp, as she is known, photographs many of the meals she has. This week, a couple of the posts caught my eye -
    • Tuesday night dinner with friends - featuring a picture of a version of an Aussie burger, using chicken instead of the regular hamburger. It looks really delicious!
    • Monday work food - guilty! - Obviously we *do* have KFC here, but it's always interesting to see how other countries serve the same kinds of food in the same restaurant. Of note are three things - 1) the soda in a can - here, it's served in a cup like any other fast food restaurant, and the last time I've seen a can with a narrow opening was maybe 10 years ago; 2) No coleslaw - if it were me, I'd have that instead of the chips (fries). ;) 3) The bun. I had a look on the Aussie KFC website, and they don't have the biscuits. Seriously, y'all are missing out on some goodness there.
  • Sky High Cork City from inphotos.org, with a great picture of Cork City in Ireland from the top of a parking ramp/garage/structure/deck.
  • Google held a Press Day in Paris this week, and released a bunch of facts and figures about their operations, highlighted at unofficial Google blog Google Operating System. The most interesting stat is that 20-25% of queries are brand new ones.
  • Anaglyph mentioned a story about the Royal Australian Navy preventing a boarding of one of their ships by Iranian forces. How, you might ask did they do this? Simple - by using some colourful language ;)

Some of the new blogs I've started reading recently -
  • Memoirs of a Gouda, who I mentioned the other day for being willing to embrace swearing.
  • Alyndabear. She just bought herself a new domain, something that I am seriously considering doing at some time in the near future. She also received a bum blog review a couple weeks back, which is when I started reading - I have to say that their review was totally off-base.
  • A Byootaful Life; I know it was mentioned in Snos' round up, but the post that got me was the one about the Digg Cake; specifically the words "boob cake". ;) Yeah, I'm a perv :p
  • A Taste of Home. It was linked off of byootaful life, and is another foodie blog. You can't get enough of those :)

New blogs in the US Blogs Community:

I'll be honest, while I'd love to invite every single blog in the US personally, there are only so many hours in the day, and so many blogs that I can comment on before I go a bit, well, silly. My goal, as I said last Monday, is to double the number of blogs by the end of the month. Right now, we're at 46, so that means there's quite a way to go. If you know of some blogs that are in the US, feel free to invite them to the community, and if you're a blogger and haven't signed up yet, why not? It's free, easy, and you'll get yourself on the US Blogs Blogroll.

Speaking of the blogroll, I've found a way to make it scroll without losing the value of the links. I'm sure you can probably hide links using that method as well.

On Bleeps and other Onomatopoeia..

As an American, I've been brought up in a culture where swearing is considered almost a mortal sin. You never see anyone swearing on TV, and if you so much as utter a curse word in public, you're looked upon as some kind of pariah who has no decency or intelligence. Either that or, depending on how foul your language is, a sailor.

Naturally, you would expect that I might be offended at someone who would swear, and would almost come to expect the words to be edited out, or bleeped, or somehow adjusted to take away the shock. And you'd be right. About a year ago, Snoskred gave me a link to an article (I don't remember where it is, or much about it) which didn't censor the word "fu*k", and this offended me. So, I said something to her about my offense to it, and basically the discussion led me to understanding that it isn't a mortal sin to swear, and that there are times when you can definitely do it. Though of course, there are times to not practice the art.

In fact, by the end of that day, I had built up the courage (yes, I know it sounds funny to think that someone has to build courage to swear, but I did have to) to actually say "fu*k", albeit somewhat quietly and without much confidence. Slowly, I did start integrating the word into my mental vocabulary and also in some conversations; though I do still use "fill" words at times around my mother even though the times that I've let one slip nothing has happened. It's probably because she swears every once in a while, most often on the road.

More recently, another word hit my radar screen - it's one that you'll hear from time to time down under, most likely in a pub when a group of mates get together. Now, if you are easily offended, I'll add here that this word is Robin Williams' least favorite swear word, and is one that is part of the original list of "seven dirty words" made famous by George Carlin. That word is "c*nt". I have to admit that I'm still not 100% confident in the use of the word, but it's coming to me quickly.

Recently, I've seen a couple of bloggers mentioning their use of swearing in their lives. One's at Oh For Fun and the other at Memoirs of a Gouda. What's in common with both of these posts is that they're simply admitting to something we all do - use swear words from time to time.

Quite honestly, if you were like I was - offended by swear words - I have a couple of suggestions. First, don't get offended, just let it go (unless it really *is* a place where you shouldn't swear).

The second tip is to find yourself an Aussie friend. They'll tell you that swearing is acceptable and something that is done all the time there, even on TV where people aren't punished for using language on TV. Sometimes, during a racing broadcast, it'll slip through and the announcer will say something totally obvious like "Well, that's the heat of the battle there" and not outright apologize for the use of language. Here, if the same thing happens, generally the driver or person responsible will be fined by the sanctioning body.

I'll let you go with two video clips here. The first comes from the first V8 Supercar race at Winton in Benalla VIC. Mark Skaife had just spun off the track and was chatting on his radio with his crew. I think the language is pretty clear, yet note the silence afterwards ;)

Next, is this clip from the NASCAR Nextel Cup race at Bristol in March, 2006. It's a bit longer cos I can't clip the file as I used the wrong audio type. Note how quickly the announcer (Mike Joy) jumped in to apologize for the language. However, I believe that there were no fines leveed because this was broadcast over the team's radio and intercepted by Fox.

Some handy tips for getting a passport

So today my Mom had to go to the Post Office to submit her application for a passport for a once-of-a-lifetime trip that she's getting to take this winter. She's known about it for quite a while but as seems to be the habit around here, we have procrastinated until today. Even so, things got a little bit hairy when it came time to actually go to the Post Office to do it.

Now, you'd think that you could just go into any post office and say, "I'd like a Passport, here's my filled-out application, birth certificate and identification." However, that's where we come to the first tip.

Make an appointment with your Post Office before you leave for there. Sure, we had checked at one point in time in the past to see when and where applications were being accepted. However, the Post Office that we were planning on going to was kinda far from where we were this morning. We had to head down to an appliance store to pick up our new microwave which works beautifully and that we only paid less than $40 for. The store's about 20 miles to the south, and the Post Office that we were planning on going to is about 10 miles to the east of me, so I thought why not try to see if the Post Offices between the store and home had passport facilities.

The first step in this is finding the information about the Post Office, so I called the toll-free number for the Post Office and they had the option of "Passport Information" which I selected. Bad move. That was just telling me about how to go about applying at the Post Office, including the fact that you need two checks - one for the State Department and one for the Postmaster. I finally get back to the main menu and get to the post office information. Thankfully, I have a really good memory of Zip codes, especially the ones over like the whole of the region, so I didn't have to fight with the voice recognition software with the name of the town that we were in at the time.

I finally get the address and number - they are on the street that we had just turned onto, but I still called ahead to see if they did Passports, but it turns out that they don't. However, she was very polite and gave me about three or four other offices that did offer passport service, but not for the one that we had originally wanted to go to. So, I figure that we may as well check into the office that we wanted to start with. I get the number, and call them; the lady who answered the phone basically said that they did passports, but were full up for today; however they would be there Monday from 10-3. So, I ask if there are any other locations that could do it - she offers up the suggestion of going to, and I quote "ww dot state dot gov". I wanted to say to her that uh, I'm on a mobile phone now and can't get to the web why do you think I asked about other locations. So I haggled for a few more seconds, and said thank you and hung up.

At this point, I pretty much gave up and decided to call for the number of a post office that was kinda far away, but not really since we know the way there. It's just the trip that's long. So, I call them and the lady who answered (another friendly person) said that she'd check, and it turned out that they had a slot between 1:30 and 2 pm, and I said, that'll work; gave them the last name, and was quite happy. The only catch was that it was 11:30. No worries though, we had to take the microwave home and stop at the store to take money out of the ATM (the bank we use charges something like $3 for using another bank's ATM on top of any fees that they might charge).

So, it comes time to go down there, and I think - I better take something along to keep me amused because this might be a while, and that's what I did. However, this does bring me to another common-sense tip -

Fill out your application in advance
Since my mom had actually filled out the application, the process was really quick. I figured that it would take 20-30 minutes, but I think it lasted only about 10-15 minutes, all thanks to having the paperwork in order (bad photo included) ahead of time.

So, now it's only a matter of up to 4 months (though I've heard that they're really being delayed) and the passport will be delivered by Priority Mail, provided that she's approved. Somehow I don't see that not happening considering the biggest legal trouble she's ever been in is for going through a red light on a freeway on-ramp about 4 years ago (it was green when we went for it, and we got caught by an unmarked squad car).

And to add some irony, we decided to take a different route to the usual on the way back and wound up (thanks to a jackass going slow and turning on the road we wanted to go on) going through the outskirts of the city we were going to go to originally. We also managed to see this interesting piece of sculpture -

Scrolling madness!

This is excellent for everyone who has a sidebar that scrolls from here to eternity, or for someone who might just want to make a list of links that can grow quite long fit into a smaller space.

I was asked by Snoskred if it were possible to make the US Blogs Blogroll be like the blogging chicks blogroll which automatically scrolls, but not making the links invisible to spiders so that they count in search engines and other sites, which doesn't happen with the blogging chicks blogroll because it's using Javascript and spiders can't see that.

My first instinct was to make an iframe, but a quick search showed that spiders don't pick them up, or if they do, it only picks up the page that is contained in the iframe. There was, however a way that you can get text to appear in the place of the iframe, but that is only for browsers that do not support iframes. I had tried it out, but only saw a blank frame instead of what I wanted.

At this point, I could have said, well, I guess it can't be done at all, but I thought to myself that there must be a way to do it, and that I just haven't found how to do it just yet. As it turns out, this is the case, as I did some searching and landed on this page, which explained how to do it with some dead simple HTML coding. Two minutes later, I had the links list scrolling magically. I'm making this post scroll as well, just to show off the new "toy" that I discovered. ;)

Now, the next challenge is to find out how to make the blogroll automatically update without using Javascript or an Iframe. I'm sure there's a way, it's just slightly beyond my knowledge of HTML right now.

We like them safe...

A quick photo today - we were out doing some errands today, and we decided to take the scenic route between point A and point B. Say what you want about fuel economy and the like, but it's not too bad when you have a car that gets about 30 miles per gallon (or about 8 L/100 km). So, anyway, the scenic route passes by one of our many lakes in the area, which is kept safe in the following method -

There was also someone out waterskiiing, but the batteries went off just as we got around the corner to see them in the water.

Sacré Bleu

I have French heritage and it took a phone book to tell me. Well, not exactly; it turns out that it was someone from out of town who put the information together. You'd think that if they, as they claim "work with every prominent member of the business community in the towns where we publish", they might have tried asking some basic questions. For example -

* Is Baruch a French name?
* What's the bigger event? A three-day picnic that raises funds for the local fire department or a celebration of an instrument played by a small group of people?
* Is there an ice rink available for use in winter?

Probably the most unusual thing is that, due to the nature of the two towns covered in this book being so closely linked (they share a school district, and maybe some community services offered through the schools), the people who put together the book labeled it "Town A/Town B 2007". Of course, logic would dictate that you might change some of your templates to reflect the fact that you're talking about two independent communities. Well, that didn't happen, so you have lines like this -

In the style of hometown telephone books from an earlier era, our A/B Directory contains large type type and the names and numbers of your friends and neighbors in A/B. ... If you look through the huge regional yellow pages, you'll notice that there are not many A/B businesses listed as advertisers ... they have little need to advertise to families 45 minutes away.

Well, there is a bit of truth there - the book does have larger print than other phone books, yet is no thicker than the white pages that cover these same communities that is distributed by the local phone company. It's also true that there aren't many businesses in my town that advertise in the über-regional yellow pages which covers all or part of 11 counties in the region. However, they are in the two phone books which cover our county, along with the two phone books which cover the same two towns.

The last minor error they made was that they decided to move a highway about 70 miles to the south, but aside from cutting some roads off on the map, they didn't make too many mistakes. The good news is that they managed to figure out the right cable and telephone companies for the area.

US Blogs Update

I did pretty good on not mentioning this for a week. I think this plan will work - I'm gonna do a weekly update thing from now on. :)

Some folks might notice that I'm going around today and leaving comments on the blogs in the community with a sort-of newsletter of things going on in the community. However, I decided to take a couple of links out of the comment so that it isn't captured by software like Akismet as being a spam comment. This is how I would post it if I would have unlimited links -

I wanted to let you know about some of the cool things going on over at the US Blogs Community at Bumpzee. There is an RSS Feed which will give you snippets of every post in the community, both on blogs and in the community itself. Also, you can get a US Blog button and a list of links to all the blogs in the community. As of now, we're up to 40 blogs, and it would be awesome if we could get the number doubled by the end of the month. It might seem to be daunting, but we've gone from none to 40 in the space of three weeks, so it's definitely possible. Be sure to tell all your blogging friends here in the States about it :)

Sephyroth
http://www.sephyroth.net

This has become a labor of love for me, and I am really proud that the community has gone from just myself to being 14th in the rankings based on the number of members in all communities across Bumpzee. It's really amazing to think that this has been done in the space of just three weeks. Thanks to all of you who have joined the community. And if you do have a blog, don't hesitate to join - it's free and you're not under any obligation to put anything on your site, but you can if you wish. :)

Some strange identification there...

In the paper I found this headline -

Ultralight crash survivors identified

Uh, wouldn't you name the survivors? By saying identify, you're implying that there's other evidence than asking the people their names which led to their identity.

Le Mans update - I didn't make it the whole 24 hours. I wound up sleeping from about 4:30 until 7:30. I watched the finish and then we went out and did some shopping, one part involved me buying an espresso from the local coffeehouse, and it was very bitter. I tried putting some sugar in it, but that did no good at all, and they didn't have any regular milk available to put in. Just hazelnut-flavored creamer... I'll stick to my own coffeepot or other kinds of coffee from now on I think.

Le Mans

For a lot of folks, the 24 Hours of Le Mans has become an annual tradition of trying to stay up all night. For me, it has become quite the same. Though I haven't ever managed to make it all 24 hours (at least that I can remember), I've tried each year since 2000, the first year that the Audis dominated the race. Of course, I didn't see the finish of that race because that Sunday was the day that I had to head off to band camp.

In 2002, I discovered Radio Le Mans and their fantastic free streaming of race coverage. It fills in the time greatly when our broadcaster, Speed have to go to other events (this year, they were interrupted by USGP Practice 3 and Qualifying, along with the Nascar Truck race (something that could have been put on Fox - we don't need to see *another* Yankees game) - I should note that they went back to coverage about 20 minutes early though). In fact, I keep it on when they have coverage on the TV as they are much better with the commentary, and don't have many breaks.

So, here goes to lasting until 8:00 AM when the race ends. :)

Don Chichi: The continuation

Many of you will have already seen the email that I received from one DON FABIANO JUTOLIO CHICHI, threatening to kill a certain famous person, who shall remain nameless for the purposes of their privacy, along with information that might make this person directly identifiable; information that has been changed or removed in mails will be indicated with curly braces - { }.

Out of curiosity, I replied as the character who this was directed towards. I will note that you'll probably feel a bit confused about the lack of command over the English language this person has. This is not real, as lots of people have heard this person speaking in perfect English in the past.

I want to reiterate that I am aware of the tricks that these scammers play most of the time. I also have access to an email account (on Gmail; all accounts have this feature) that does not show my IP address information to the receiver. If you do receive a mail similar to this one, do not reply to it. There is no need to, and there is nobody really coming after you or your family. This is only an attempt to steal your hard-earned money.

So, this was the email that was received on the 12th of May:

Subject: WHY ARE YOU INVOLVE TO BE KILLED,REPLY OR YOU WAIT FOR YOUR DEATH

HELLOW {Famous person's name},

I NORMALLY INTRODUCE MY SELF BEFORE I EXECUTE MY JOB,AM MR DON FABIANO JUTOLIO CHICHI,AN ITALIAN CITIZEN,YOU CAN SEE THAT BY MY NAME AND AT THE SAME TIME A HIRED ASSASSINE (AN ASSASINATOR) THAT IS MY JOB.

BUT BEFORE I CARRY ON MY DUTY,I NORMALLY LIKE TO HER FROM THE PERSON BEFORE HE OR SHE WILL MEET HIS SUDDEN DEATH,I WILL LIKE YOU TO BRIEF ME THE REASON WHY YOU ARE INVOLVED/ABOUT TO BE ASSASSINATE.

MY BOYS ARE NOW AFTER YOU,THAT IS TO SAY,THEY ARE NOW MONITORING YOUR MOVEMENTS,8 OF THEM HAVE ARRIVED YOUR COUNTRY (THE SPIES TEAM) WHILE THE REMAINING 7 WILL BE ARRIVED NEXT WEEK WHICH IS (THE EXECUTION TEAM)
AS SOON AS THE EXECUTION TEAM ARRIVED,CONSIDER YOUR SELF AS A DEAD PERSON BECAUSE THEY WILL NOT ACCEPT ANY OFFER OR WHAT EVER FROM YOU.I WANT TO INFORM YOU THAT YOUR FAMILY MEMBERS MAY BE INVOLVED ONLY IF YOU MAKE THE REPROT TO THE POLICE OR ANY ENFORMENT AGENCIES,THAT IS TO SAY,IF YOU TAKE THE MATTER TO THE POLICE,ALL,I SAID ALL YOUR FAMILY MEMBERS WILL BE DEAD WITHIN A SHORT TIME BECAUSE I NEVER MISS A TRAGET,I HAVE BEEN IN THE FIELD FOR GOOD 34 YEARS AND SINCE THEN,I HAVE NEVER FAILED/DISAPPOINT ANY OF MY CUSTOMERS.

SO,BE WARNED TILL I HEAR FROM YOU IF YOU LIKE.

DON CHICHI.

I replied thusly, with the natural uncertainty that anyone would have if they received this mail (however, I will admit that most people would not be so kind after receiving this kind of mail):

Subject: Re: WHY ARE YOU INVOLVE TO BE KILLED,REPLY OR YOU WAIT FOR YOUR DEATH

DON CHICHI

No reply in a day means Don sends more information about my character (again, easily found out on Google or other search engines). He also sent some photos that were from at least a couple of years ago based on the surroundings...

Subject: YOUR INFORMATIONS/ {translation}

DEAR {full name},

AFTER ALL I TOLD YOU,YOU GO AHEAD AND DISCUSSED THAT WITH YOUR STAFF AND THAT YOUR STAFF HAS COURSED A BIG PROBLEM FOR YOU WHICH IS YOUR SUDDEN DEATH.YOU WILL BE EXPECTING YOUR DEATH ANY MOMENT FROM NOW,YOU ASKED A DEAL WHICH WILL BE A WAY OUT FOR YOU.I TOLD YOU WHAT IS GOING TO BE THE SOLUTION AND YOUR STAFF IS MAKING EVERYTHING TO BE WORST FOR YOU.

DON CHICHI,
THE KILLER INSTRUCTOR

Another day with no reply from me means another threat from Don:

Subject: FINAL NOTICE

FOOLISH {first name},

An important thing about these scammers - if they see money they will usually jump at the chance. Don's no different:

Subject: ACCEPTANCE

DON CHICHI,
THE KILLER INSTRUCTOR.

I finally decide to reply, and tell him that I've "met" one of his "team". There is no money involved in this at all, and there is no intention to send the scammer any money.

Blogger in draft...

While reading through my Google Reader this morning, I spotted this item on Google Operating System, about the "new new Blogger", called Blogger in draft. The first new feature is video uploading. So, here goes, with a clip of the CP2816, a steam engine, recorded two years ago from a public location.

Enjoy :)

In case the video doesn't work, here's a picture of the engine -

And now the video -

So that's how they do it....

It seems that once you have someone or something figured out, another little curve ball gets tossed/bowled/etc. at you.

In this case, a writer in the Sydney Morning Herald's "Stay in touch" blog wrote this interesting description of how TV ratings are calculated Down Under. Here's a little taste -

At 2am each day, all Diary recordings over the past 24 hours are sent to the central Taminondas computer, from which the ratings figures are calculated and sent to TV networks at 8am.

I managed to get that far believing everything that was written. Of course, it was around that point that I started to see the comments correcting this "history" of Aussie TV Ratings. If you want the straight dope, read up over here.

In other news, I've gone and done something quite stupid - allowed myself to get sunburnt. I am aware of the risks of this, and I'm happy to report that I do have some sunscreen, and I also have an umbrella that I can use while outside. I also have the advantage that there is partial shade where I go outside; at least until about 10 am.

The US Blogs Blogroll...

It's going to seem like I'm a broken record, but here I am yet again, talking about the US Blogs community at BUMPzee. The latest thing that I've done is go around and put together a blogroll of all the blogs in the community as of last evening.

If you're interested in a copy of the blogroll, right click on this link and save the file. There are simple instructions for you to put it in your page; you'll then have links to all the blogs in the community, along with a badge for the community.

Enjoy! :)

Guest Posting

A few days ago, I spotted a post on Freshblogger asking for guest posters, and I thought that this would be a great opportunity to get myself out there, and to teach people about something important, how not to get scammed by work-at-home email scams. So, I wrote an article, and it's now been posted there - How to NOT make money on the Internet.

I think it's a pretty good article; let me know what y'all think about it. :)

You what? (6 weird things about me)

Since Snoskred has tagged me and anyone else who reads there (by the way, if you haven't been there recently, take a look - she redid the look on there and it's brilliant), here are my 6 weird things about myself. As far as tagging along the chain, I'm not entering into the politics of it either, so if you have a blog, feel free to do it; just leave a comment and I'll note it here. :)

1) I've always been fascinated with, of all things, the phone book. I think this is based in the fact that my mother would bring old books home from time to time, usually because they were out-of-date. Even worse was when I'd go to the library and actively seek out the section of the reference section that had the out of town and out of state books. In fact, I still remember flipping through the Nashville phone book a few years ago and seeing all of the mobile phone providers (this was before everybody and their uncle had them; I didn't get my first mobile until 2004, and I still have it); it seemed that they all had phone numbers ending in -2355 (-CELL for those who don't have a phone in front of you ;)). Ironically, there are more phone books here now than there have been for a while. I'll spare you the details of them though. :)

2) This is something that comes as a result of living next to railroad tracks for most of my life, but I am a railfan. In other words, I like to catch trains in sight, either just with my eyes, or with the camera. Probably the weirdest thing I ever did with this so far is going to Illinois for a railroad festival, only to find out that it had ended the previous day and all the displays were gone. I did, however, manage to get a picture of a train that day. From the driveway at home, obscured by trees.

3) Most folks, when they go out and travel, will take photos or buy a little trink et to mark their trip to that city. It could be a small spoon, or even a larger piece of memorabilia. However, if I am the person who is in charge of getting the trinkets, there is a great chance that I will return with a newspaper. I have a collection of a lot of papers from around the country, from the LA Times to the Washington Post. The thing is that this isn't like just the front pages but the full paper for the actual day.

4) Another fascination I have is with the roads. Not just where they go and how you get there, but the signs that you see at the side of the road. Most folks would call me weird, but there is a term - roadgeek. I can spend hours looking at sites like AARoads or OzRoads. I've even gone so far as to email a photo of a sign and explain the significance of it (the sign is no longer there).

5) When I was young, I used to be scared of a jingle for one of our major insurance companies, American Family Insurance. It is a devilishy simple jingle that is just the name of the company sung out. Nevertheless, I was absolutely terrified of the advertisements. If I had to guess what the fear came from, it might have been the graphic they showed on screen at the end of the commercial - just the company's logo along with the walking fingers for the yellow pages. Thankfully, I'm over that now. ;)

6) This is probably the most unusual, so it fits perfectly. ;) I have this odd tendency to daer sdrow sdrawkab, or read words backwards. This is another of those things that I just started doing and kinda never stopped. It doesn't hurt anybody and I always do it just to myself. However, if you start hearing me saying redrum, it's probably not because I'm thinking of its mirror. ;)

Get your US Blog buttons!

I had seen recently where some badges had been made for Aussie bloggers, and for the Aussie Blog community at Bumpzee. So, I thought why not make one for the US Blogs?

So, that's exactly what I did ;)

You'll see one of them at the immediate right. This is the larger version of it, 160x30 pixels. I also have one in the standard "antipixel" size of 80x15.

I want one!

We all want one, don't we? ;)

So, here's how you go about it:

80x15 (antipixel):

160x30 (double size):

Alternatively, you may save the file to your own server. It's only about 300 bytes (probably the smallest image you've ever seen, it only has 5 colors in it ;)).

Hope y'all like it ;)

And if you haven't joined the US Blogs community yet, why not? :)

The Wet Death

So, it's getting into summer, and the season for strong thunderstorms and, on the rare occasion, tornadoes. However, the situation today is one that has not been seen around here for a couple of years. This is how I summarized the situation at about 1 PM today -

there's a 45% chance of receiving hail 3/4" (2cm) or larger (10%+ chance of hail 2" (5cm) or larger); a 45% chance of receiving storm winds in excess of 50 knots (58 mph, 95 km/h) (10%+ chance of winds exceeding 65 knots (75 mph, 120 km/h); a 15-30% chance of a tornado (10%+ chance of a strong tornado, EF2 to EF5 intensity). And these storms are expected to be moving through at about 60 mph (100 km/h)

Of course, there was one school district that actually cancelled school today. Even the meteorologists were baffled by this choice. The hilarious thing is that they've already had to extend the school year due to snow days, so it's just another day that they have to go next week...

I'm prepared for the storms; I've got my laptop downstairs and turned on, with some radars and the NWS webpage loaded in firefox, autorefreshing every 5 minutes (one of the things that you get from having Tab Mix Plus).

What a waste

One of the things about living in a more rural area is that at times people will just toss junk out of their cars and into the ditches alongside the road. Usually, it's an empty fast food bag or cup. Sometimes you'll see an aluminum can or soda bottle in there.

However, this one takes the cake. While I was out mowing the lawn, I spotted a largeish object in the grass, and went over to investigate. Note that these pictures are a re-enactment of the original scene.

At first glance, it appears to be a bottle of booze. And you'd be right with that guess. It is a bottle of Kessler Whiskey, as witnessed by this, what almost could be termed, marketing quality shot. If only it had a proper label and a full bottle.

There was one part of the bottle that was still intact however. It turns out that the little bit about the history of the product was still there, and here it is for you all to enjoy:

The only question I have for the person who threw it out of their car is why? My suspicion is that it was someone who was underage and didn't want their parents finding out about their experimentation with the bottle. It might also be someone who drank three quarter of the bottle and decided that the taste wasn't for them. Ah well, it will remain one of nature's mysteries. All I know is that the only place that it's fit for now is the trash can.

Neil Armstrong offends people?

Surely you jest. Nope, apparently his most famous quote, one that the whole world probably knows - "One small step for man, one giant leap for mankind" - are cause for controversy at Purdue University, where they want to use the quote for a marketing campaign.

Now, when I first heard that there was some controversy about this, I assumed that there was some silly copyright issue that had to be dealt with. Nope, I was wrong. Apparently, the University tested the quote to see if it offended anyone. Amazingly, there were actually people who wanted to change the quote in order to avoid offending people.

Seriously, if you're offended by the use of mankind in a generic term, why? It's a general term that if you thought critically, you would realize that it isn't meant to exclude women.

Then again, I'm young and old-fashioned....

At least that's when I'm guessing this notebook is from, based on the fact that there are a bunch of notes from Geometry class, which was the math unit that I took in that year (which was the highest level you could take).

There are some very interesting things in this notebook - including some information that was given to us in class about different countries of Africa. One country in particular that I had notes on was Nigeria. I think I've seen this notebook recently as it was already opened to the page on Nigeria. This is the list of words that I used to describe the country back then:

multilingual
ethnic groups, oil, heavily populated,
younger citizens, large rainforests,
varied terrain Niger + Benue Rivers,
salt mines, commercial fishing (whoppers)
timber + rubber, military rule, coffee,
juju music, nobel prize for lit: Wole Soyinka
widely diverse lifestyles

One of the things about baiting the scammers is that you actually learn a lot about the countries that these people are in. For example, I now know that there is no military rule at present; in fact they've recently held elections to find out who would succeed the current president, Olusegun Obsanjo. Another thing that is obvious, but wasn't so at the time was the knowledge about the amount of scammers that there are over there. Obviously, not everyone is a scammer, in fact, a vast majority of the country are upstanding citizens, even if they have to pay out some bribes from time to time.

Another item in the notebook is a list of things that I'd have my kids (if and when I have some). One of the things I'd have them do is "Try to listen to Art Bell on Fridays". It's funny the things you get hooked to from time to time. Of course, this was at a time when you could flip through the radio and find his show at least 5 or 6 times through the AM dial. Now, I think you'd be lucky to find it on one station, but I haven't followed it since he retired the first or second time

Don't Gotta Get It

First, apologies for the lousy grammar of the title, but it makes sense (kinda.)

There's a show on the Food Network called "Gotta Get It". The premise is that they show you all kinds of utter crap that you "Gotta Get". For example, an esky (cooler) on wheels that you can drive around. Yes, drive. I don't know anyone who would buy such a thing just to lose some storage space in their cooler, but I guess if they can move some of these contraptions, more power to them. The same really goes for the rest of the products they're selling tn TV. I've been watching for the better part of an hour and yet am to see something that would be particularly useful to me.

In other news, I've been busy cleaning my room in preparation for the delivery of a new bed; it's not like I don't *need* one necessarily, but my mattress has been around for something like 10 years or more, so I guess it's high time to just do it.

Most Haunted Live - Proof that Barnum was right (again)

I'm sure you probably heard something about this if you've watched the Travel Channel recently, but there are a bunch of people from the "Most Haunted" team (they're all Brits except for the woman who tells you how to text the show, etc.) at the Eastern State Penitentiary in Philadelphia. It's noted for being the jail where Al Capone was held for a period of time.

And, apparently, for the paranormal. I guess. Thus the Travel Channel have decided to bring the "Most Haunted Live" people over here for a 7-hour program looking for ghosts and other things. Quite frankly, I don't believe a bit of it; but that's just me.

The hilarious thing are these people watch the webcams set-up (Windows Media there) and I've seen this a couple of times in the 5 or so minutes I watched, where someone will pass through one of the cameras. Now, the lunatics who write into the show say that it's some kind of disturbance or some baloney; it's obviously someone from the production crew walking through.

The latest thing is this fella (Karl, apparently the husband of the main "inside" hostess/executive producer) who has somehow scratched himself through his shirt and had what they claim to be blood on his shirt. The best part is that he had a minor complaint about doing what would be logical, taking the shirt off: "De-robing on telly". Generally, if I were bleeding, I wouldn't give a shit if I was on tv, I'd want to get some attention, ya know. As it is, two people have already fainted.

But really, the best part is the interaction, as I had mentioned. They're asking folks to text in comments, participate in the forums, and even send in your "psychic art" (I think the translation is just draw a face or a person and put some text next to it and claim it's psychic) via fax.

It's on the Travel Channel (via Analogue cable and satellite) until 3am Eastern time (Midnight pt), and I've been drawn in, mostly for a good chuckle. Especially now that they're doing a Ouija board session (isn't it funny that the little pointer never moves unless there are hands touching it?). This should prove interesting, I think.

11:04: This is lovely! The English woman they have on to research the things these folks in the prison bring up is discussing a murder that happened there in the 1800s, and this was her almost-exact line. "...and he nicked his uniform. Of course, that's English for 'stole'." Yep, us Americans would get confused at that. Then again, there are people willing to shell out 99c a month for a "Ghost Detector" program that will tell you if there are variances in electrical waves via their mobile phone....
